Comino
Comino is a must-see on your Malta trip and you’re about to learn how to take the ferry from Malta to Comino.
The smaller island of Comino lies between Malta and Gozo, the two main islands of the Maltese archipelago. Except for a few historical buildings, Comino remained largely untouched by man, and today, it unfolds its beauty at every step. The island is famous for its mesmerising Blue Lagoon, a paradise-like destination and a postcard-perfect spot for swimming in heavenly blue waters.
The ferry from Malta to Blue Lagoon (Comino) is the first option to visit this turquoise and aquamarine haven. However, this little piece of paradise is often a victim of its own success and gets overcrowded. That’s why boat tours and charters offer a more peaceful option for enjoying your trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon.

Ferry service from Malta to Comino Blue Lagoon
The ferry is a popular way to get to Comino from Malta, and also the cheapest. A few operators offer a ferry service from the northern tip of Malta to the Blue Lagoon. The boats depart from Marfa and Ċirkewwa, near the Malta-Gozo ferry terminal.
Please note that some ferry services offer to take you from Malta to Comino and then to Gozo instead of returning you to Malta, and the other way round. They offer these trips for those looking to take a Comino ferry from Gozo.
Operators
Two operators run ferries taking you to the famous Blue Lagoon: Comino Ferries Co-Op and Ebsons Comino Ferries. Both offer round trips to the Blue Lagoon from Malta, while the latter operates from both Malta and Gozo.
How to get to the ferry terminal?
There are actually two ferry terminals: Ċirkewwa (Malta), near the location from where the ferry between Malta and Gozo operates, and Marfa, further up the road leading to Ċirkewwa.
The bus is the most budget-friendly way to reach one of the ferry terminals, but it’s not the fastest. You will end up wasting time on the way, especially if you’re not staying in Mellieħa, the closest village. What’s more, Malta’s bus system is not renowned for its reliability and delays are commonplace.
If you still wish to get to the Comino ferry terminals by bus, here are the routes and travel times:
- From Valletta: Routes 41 and 42 – 1h25
- From Sliema: Route 222 – 1h10
- From St. Julian’s: Route 222 – 1h
- From Buġibba: Route 221 – 35min
These routes will take you directly to Ċirkewwa, their final destination, but you can stop at Ahrax bus stop if you wish to take the ferry from Marfa.
We strongly recommend that you depart early enough and allow extra time to make sure you make it on time to the ferry terminal.
Alternatively, you can hop on a taxi or drive yourself to the ferry terminal if you’re planning to rent a car.
Schedule
The Comino Ferries service (Co-Op boats) runs every 30 minutes, while Ebsons Comino Ferries depart every hour. The first departure is around 9 a.m., and the last one depends on the season. If you’re planning to visit Comino Island in the winter, keep in mind that the last departure from the Blue Lagoon is early so make your time accordingly.

Prices
A round trip Malta-Blue Lagoon Comino costs €15 per person and children can benefit from a discounted price. Customers can get a discounted ticket if they book online with Ebsons Comino Ferries.
Note that an additional charge per bulky item brought on board, such as bicycles, deck chairs or inflated mattresses, usually applies.
Ticket purchase
The return tickets are to be purchased at the booth located next to the ferry terminal.
If you want to skip the queues, you can also buy your tickets in advance on the companies’ websites.
Services included
Unlike the ferries running between Malta and Gozo, the ferries to Comino are small and do not offer onboard facilities to their passengers. You won’t find toilets, a cafeteria or a bookshop on board. All you can do as you journey towards the mesmerising Blue Lagoon is to sit back, relax and enjoy the scenic views.
The ferry only carries foot passengers but not any vehicle. Comino being almost car-free, passengers eagerly leave their cars behind to soak up in aquamarine waters or immerse themselves in raw nature as they hike around the island in the cooler season.
Passengers are allowed to bring their own food and drinks, as well as a piece of carry-on luggage on board.
A tour of the Comino caves is included in the price, but only the boats departing in the morning and early afternoon actually sail to the caves.
