Gozo
Can you ever say that you have visited Malta if you haven’t been to Gozo? Of course not!
Gozo is the second island of the Maltese archipelago, located northwest of the main island of Malta. It might be smaller and more rural than mainland Malta, but it is a must on any Malta itinerary.
A day trip to visit Gozo is perfect for discovering all the sites and hidden gems this beautiful island has in store. From historical sites, a bastioned city and typical villages to picturesque bays, caves and dramatic cliffs, there is so much to see on Gozo Island!
To make sure you enjoy your day trip to Malta’s sister island, we have created the perfect Gozo itinerary for you. We are locals who want you to make the most of your day on Gozo Island, the place we are proud to call home.
In this article, you will find a full itinerary plus some travel tips to make your day trip to Gozo one to remember.
How to get to Gozo?
Since Gozo is separated from Malta by an inlet, you will need to take a boat to get there.

Ferries to Gozo
The usual way to get from Malta to Gozo is by ferry. You have the choice between the regular ferry and the fast ferry. Let’s see which option suits you best.
Gozo Channel
The first option is to catch the ferry operated by Gozo Channel from Ċirkewwa (at the northernmost point of Malta).
This is the cheapest option – a standard foot passenger ticket costs €4.65 and has to be bought upon return to the main island. You won’t be charged when crossing from Malta to Gozo (as surprising as it may seem). The other advantage is that if you’re driving a car, you can take it onboard.
The crossing lasts approximately 25 minutes, and the ferry operates day and night.
The ferry passes near Comino, so you can enjoy scenic views on the way.
Fast ferry
If you’re staying in Valletta or nearby, taking the fast ferry from the capital city is probably more convenient. It will also save you time, as the trip takes just under 45 minutes.
The ferry terminal is located near the Valletta-3 Cities ferry terminal, on the Grand Harbour. Note that you can’t board a car on the fast ferry.

See our dedicated article for more information about the ferry services.
Get to Gozo hassle-free with Yippee
Taking the ferry to Gozo can turn into a hassle, especially if you’re staying far from the ferry terminals. You will need to waste time on public transport, drive all the way to Ċirkewwa (if you’re renting a car) or pay a lot for a taxi.
If you opt for a Tuk Tuk or a Quad Bike Tour of Gozo with Yippee (more on that further down), the transport to Gozo is included. Wherever you are staying, we pick you up with Yippee transport and get you back at the end of the day. The crossing to Gozo is made on our private boat (weather permitting) or on the communal ferry (tickets provided).

Getting around Gozo
Public transport: bus
You can make your way around Gozo using the local buses, using the same tickets and cards as in Malta.
Public transport might be inexpensive, but it’s not an efficient and reliable way to get around Gozo.
As you look at the star-shaped map of Malta Public Transport, you will soon notice that most bus routes start and end at Victoria, the capital of Gozo. Here is the issue: to get from A to B, you will mostly need to change at Victoria, thus wasting time.
What’s more, some routes don’t have an extended schedule, making it more difficult to reach some places during your day trip.
Hop-on Hop-off bus
The popular and touristy Hop-on Hop-Off buses have a route to visit Gozo. Open-top buses stop at the major attractions, making them a popular choice for a day trip to Gozo.
However, you only get to see the tourist sites and miss the hidden gems Gozo Island has in store.
Rental car
If you rent a car in Malta, you can take it onboard on the Gozo Channel ferry. It is also possible to book a rental car and pick it up upon arrival at Mġarr Harbour. This is a good choice if you want to enjoy a DIY day trip to Gozo and discover the island at your own pace.
Spot the places you want to discover and use Google Maps to find your way around.
Your 1 day Gozo itinerary
Best things to do on Gozo
With so many places of interest and natural beauty, it can be tricky to decide what to see on a Gozo day trip.
Here is a list of places of interest to include on your Gozo itinerary:
- Tas-Sanap Cliffs
- Xlendi
- Wash houses (Fontana)
- Citadel (Victoria)
- Dwejra Bay
- Ta’ Pinu
- Wied Il-Għasri
- Salt pans (Xwejni)
- Qbajjar and Marsalforn Bay
- Wied il-Mielaħ Window
- Tal-Mixta Cave
Let’s take a closer look at each place.

Tas-Sanap Cliffs in Gozo
Let’s go on with a stunning natural beauty: Tas-Sanap Cliffs. Gozo’s southern coast is shaped by dramatic limestone cliffs plunging into the glistening blue waters.
Tas-Sanap Cliffs provide the perfect backdrop for hiking and trekking enthusiasts, as well as a stunning spot for sunset lovers. So put on your hiking shoes, grab your camera and walk the trail that runs along the cliffs.
You can hike from Ta’ Cenc Cliffs to Sanap Cliffs and even continue till Xlendi. To get to Sanap Cliffs and find the trail, you need to head to Triq it-Tilliera, walk to the corner where the street meets Triq Ras in-Newwiela and follow the coastline to reach the highest point, Il-Pinnur.
Xlendi Belvedere, Cliff and Caves
Once a fishing village, Xlendi Bay has become a popular seaside destination for Maltese and visitors alike. The bay features a tiny beach leading to welcoming shallow clear blue waters, as well as rock bordering the shore. Under the water, reef formations offer a beautiful playground for divers of all levels.
Xlendi Bay is also an ideal destination to sample the local food, thanks to several restaurants along the seafront.
The bay is flanked by high cliffs, the right one (when you look toward the sea) featuring stairs leading to a hidden cave. On the opposite cliff stands a tower guarding the bay since the 17th century. Near Xlendi Tower, a belvedere overlooking the bay offers fantastic photo opportunities.
Fontana and the Knights’ washhouses
On the way to Victoria is a place little tourists know: Two public washhouses built by the Knights of St John. In particular, the great spring, known locally as l-Għajn il-Kbira or l-Għajn tal-Ħasselin, showcases arch-shaped shelters built in the sixteenth century.
The washhouses at Fontana are fed by two freshwater springs, a rare commodity in Malta. They are well-preserved and are still in use by the local population nowadays.
As you visit Fontana, you will see a very old irrigation system transporting the water from Kerċem Valley and witness this interesting living testimony from the past.

Gozo Citadel or Cittadella
Perched on one of Gozo’s highest hills and overlooking the island is the Citadel. This small fortified city is located in Victoria, Gozo’s capital and is a must-see to include on your Gozo itinerary.
Stepping into the Cittadella is truly like stepping back in time. The hill has been settled since Neolithic times, and fortifications were built during the Middle Ages to protect the Gozitans from raids by pirates and other enemies.
One of the most outstanding things about the Citadella is the 360-degree scenery of the whole Gozo island. As you walk along the fortified walls, a breathtaking panorama will unfold before your eyes: rolling hills, picturesque villages, a lush green landscape in the winter and the deep-blue Mediterranean sea at the backdrop.
If you are a history buff or simply curious to learn more about the fascinating past of the Citadel, you can make some time in your day trip to Gozo to visit at least one of the museums, such as the Old Prison, the Folklore Museum, the Gozo Nature Museum, and the cathedral dedicated to Santa Marija.
Dwejra Bay – San Lawrenz
Located on the west coast, Dwejra Bay is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular places on Gozo Island – one you should definitely include in your day trip to Gozo. Once famous for its Azure Window, the place keeps attracting curious travellers in search of untouched natural beauty.
The Azure Window was a naturally formed rock arch standing proudly on the coast. Unfortunately, it collapsed in Mach 2017 during a fierce storm, but the area is still stunning and the rock formations are worth it nevertheless.

One of the most interesting rock formations is the Fungus Rock, whose access was prohibited during the Knights’ time. In fact, the rock is home to a plant that was thought to possess healing properties. The Fungus Rock and the rest of the bay are guarded by a watchtower.
Another highlight of Dwejra Bay is the Blue Hole, a natural inland sea pool and a paradise for all scuba diving enthusiasts.
Give your back to Dwejra Bay and you will find another famous landmark: Inland Sea. This lagoon of seawater is separated from the open sea by high cliffs pierced by a natural tunnel.
Ta’ Pinu Gozo – Għarb
The Ta’ Pinu Basilica is the local Lourdes and one of the most beautiful churches in Gozo. Surrounded by lovely countryside, the edifice is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is known as the national shrine of miracles.
In fact, a Gozitan woman called Karmni Grim heard a voice coming from the chapel and nowadays Ta’ Pinu is filled with stories of miraculous healings.
The church square is adorned with colourful mosaics symbolising the four mysteries of the rosary. Inside, the neo-romantic church features stained glass windows that create an interesting contrast with the luminous hue of the Maltese stone.

Wied Il-Għasri Gozo
Located on the north coast of Gozo, Wied Il-Għasri makes for a scenic island escape. This hidden gem is a secluded inlet framed by high cliffs that offer a striking contrast with the turquoise waters.
There is even a small beach at the end of the inlet: A lovely place to swim, snorkel or just relax while listening to the surf playing with the pebbles. It is also known among divers for its underwater caves.
Wied Il-Għasri might not be an easy place to get to, but we advise you to add it to your day trip to Gozo.
Gozo Salt Pans
Just to the east of Wied Il-Għasri lie the ancient salt pans, still in use today. As you follow the coastline towards Xwejni Bay, the mesmerizing natural beauty of the salt pans will not leave you indifferent.
Terraced fields stretch to the horizon before the eyes of the visitors, forming a mosaic adorned with glistening white salt crystals. You can get down and walk on the public moonlike rocks that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. Make sure you add this highly photogenic and Instagrammable place to your day trip to Gozo!
If you are lucky, you could even witness the harvesting of the salt during the summertime. Keep in mind that some salt pans have unauthorized access, as they are private property.
If you want to bring a local product back home, you can buy some salt at the small shop located near Xwejni Bay.

Qbajjar and Marsalforn Bay
Marsalforn is a popular seaside destination on the north coast of Gozo island. Lively with tourists coming to have the perfect “sea and sun” holiday in the summer, very quiet in the winter, it didn’t lose its fishing village charm.
With its small sandy beach and picturesque sea views, Marsalforn makes for a laid-back break during your day trip to Gozo. The beach is easily accessible and has many amenities, which is ideal if you are travelling with your family.
Here, you can eat at one of the restaurants or enjoy a stroll on the seafront promenade while having an ice cream.
The small town is also known for its scuba diving schools offering the opportunity to take a first dive and discover Gozo from under the water (for both beginners and experienced divers).
If you keep walking along the promenade towards the west, you will end up in Qbajjar, a quieter bay where you can take a dip and see some salt pans dug in the rocks.
Other places to visit on a 1-day trip to Gozo
Wied il-Mielaħ Window – Għarb
Have you been told that the famous Azure Window collapsed and feel disappointed because you missed such a natural wonder? But don’t worry – Gozo has another natural arch in store!
Located in the outskirts of Għarb and Għasri villages, Wied il-Mielaħ Window is a true hidden gem. This massive naturally-formed limestone arch is nestled at the end of a winding valley called Wied il-Mielaħ (‘Salt Valley’ in Maltese).
The 29-metre-high window is also a playground for adventure seekers and offers the perfect setting for rock climbing and diving.
This nature wonder has to be earned: Reaching the window on your own is not easy due to its remote location and lack of signs to guide you. Quad Bikes are actually the best way to reach Wied il-Mielaħ Window, especially if you choose to be accompanied by a local guide (more on that further down).
Tal-Mixta Cave
Let’s conclude our suggestions for a day trip to Gozo with a hidden magical vantage point: Tal-Mixta Cave.
Overlooking Ramla Bay, this is one of the most beautiful caves in Gozo. Tal-Mixta Cave is located on the eastern side of Ramla Beach, a beautiful red sandy beach whose colour offers a striking contrast with the turquoise hues of seawater.
Tal-Mixta Cave is a natural window from where you can take in awe-inspiring views of Ramla Bay and the surrounding nature that remains untouched by man.
The cave makes for an absolutely stunning spot for photography enthusiasts and has become a popular Instagram hotspot. If you are visiting late in the day, you will also be rewarded with a beautiful sunset.
This peaceful location conceals an interesting history, as Tal-Mixta Cave was first inhabited during prehistoric times. Later on, the Knights fortified the place to defend it against pirates.
Finally, Tal-Mixta Cave is a great alternative to Calypso Cave, located on the western side of Ramla Bay. The latter owes its name to the Nymph Calypso, who held Ulysses captive for seven years, according to Homer’s Odyssey, and is now closed due to geological movement.

Why not visit Comino and its Blue Lagoon?
Between the islands of Malta and Gozo lies a third one: Comino Island. This small island paradise is home to the Blue Lagoon, famous for its stunning clear waters. But Comino has more than that to offer.
Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon offers a paradise-like scenery with crystal-clear waters, white sand and gorgeous surroundings.
But keep in mind that you won’t be the only one to visit this stunning destination, as the place gets very busy during the summer months. The small beach is overrun with sunbeds and the turquoise water attracts crowds coming to take a dip in this paradise-like lagoon.
During the winter, you can enjoy the Blue Lagoon and the rest of the island more peacefully, but we don’t recommend that you swim because of the presence of treacherous underwater currents.
If you wish to fully enjoy all that the Blue Lagoon has to offer, the best is to do it from a boat. For example, Yippee tours include a boat trip to Comino (weather permitting).

Crystal Lagoon
Around the corner of Blue Lagoon is another gem: Crystal Lagoon. This lesser-known bay is just as beautiful as the first one but impossible to reach on foot due to its rugged limestone cliffs.
If you wish to swim in one of the most beautiful bays of Malta but want a peaceful experience, the best is to take a boat trip that makes a stop to allow you to swim in the Crystal Lagoon.
Comino caves
Over time, the Mediterranean Sea has shaped many caves around Comino. Crystal-clear waters topped with magnificent structures: This magnificent sight can only be held from the sea, on board a boat.
Some of the most well-known caves include Popeye’s Cave, Blue Lagoon Cave, Santa Marija Caves and Lovers Cave.
