Malta’s sister island is known for its numerous caves that conceal centuries and even millennia of history.

Among them, Tal-Mixta Cave became one of the most famous caves in Gozo and even a popular Instagram hotspot.

Despite all its appearances on social networks and tourist brochures, Tal-Mixta Cave is still a hidden gem, offering the most amazing panoramic view of Ramla Bay and raw nature at its best.

Grab your camera, and let us guide you to this iconic cave on Gozo island!

Tal-Mixta Cave Gozo: Gozo’s Famous Photography Spot

Ramla Bay, a beautiful red sandy beach in Gozo, is framed by two caves: the popular Calypso Cave and Tal-Mixta Cave.

The latest is a hidden cave proudly standing on the eastern side of Ramla Bay (Ramla l-Hamra in Maltese) and watching over the beach.

As you step into the cave, you will be able to witness a stunning panorama through its wide crevice.

Take some time to take in the views emerging from this natural window, and if you are a photography enthusiast, grab your camera to take some amazing photos.

If you visit Tal-Mixta Cave in the evening, you will also be rewarded with a beautiful sunset.

Behind the peaceful atmosphere that emanates from the rocks lies an interesting history. Tal-Mixta Cave was first inhabited by the Troglodytes, a prehistoric race of people who lived in caves. Mixta is actually derived from the Maltese name mxett, which represents shelter during the winter months. Later, the location served as a watch spot for the Knights of St. John. Following the kidnapping of a Gozitan family by pirates, the Knights fortified the place and built an entrenchment wall hiding the cave entrance and a wall made of rough stones with two small openings to accommodate cannons facing the sea.

Where is Tal-Mixta Cave?

Tal-Mixta Cave is located on the outskirts of Nadur village. The cave overlooks Ramla Bay from the east, standing opposite the popular Calypso Cave.

  • From Victoria, take the route 302 (direction Ramla) to Qasab, then walk 1.8 km.

Driving

If you are renting a car in Gozo, you can set the location on Google Maps. Drive to the end of an unsealed road called Triq l-Ghassa tal-Mahrag and park your car at one of the parking bays located around 300 meters far from the cave. You will finally take a short descending staircase to get to the cave.

Hiking

If you are an adventure seeker, you might consider hiking to Tal-Mixta Cave from Ramla Bay. Follow the way that climbs the cliff on the eastern end of Ramla Bay beach. Be careful as you climb up, as the way is quite steep and made of rough stones and dry soil. You need to be in good shape and wear sturdy shoes.
